Whether you are a complete beginner or keen amateur, there is something for everyone (adult or child) in the classes, workshops, and one-off taster sessions on offer at Claire Porter Ceramics. Listed below are the current courses available, but should you wish to join the waiting list, please feel free to contact us.
An introduction to throwing on the potters wheel. These are small classes (max 4) on set dates each month, where you will have the opportunity to throw small vessels on an electric wheel.. Included in the price are up to 3 small pieces of work which we will bisque fire, glaze and re-fire for collection at a later date. Additional pieces can be fired at a small additional cost.
For adults/older teenagers.
Wear suitable clothes as throwing can be messy! Aprons provided.
Making day - Max 4 people
First Session: Learn to make slab tiles, tea-bowls or pinch pots for firing using Japanese style crackle glazes and metallic lustres,
Second Session: Glazing and raku firing. Demo of basic glazing methods before glazing your own work.
You take your work away with you at the end of the firing. Suitable for beginners.
This is an ideal entry level course for beginners as no experience is necessary. If you have some hand-building experience already you may develop your own project during the two hours (subject to size/technique restrictions).
Wear suitable fire resistant clothes. Aprons, masks and gloves provided.
For those who would like to experience the excitement of Raku firing only, bisque fired pots/dishes can be bought on the day from £3 each or you can bring up to 6 pieces of your own bisque fired work (depending on the size).
Hot drinks and cakes are included (please advise of any dietary requirements). but please bring your own packed lunch.
Firing sessions - Max 8 people
Each firing can take about half an hour and depends hugely on the weather conditions, affected by wind, humidity and temperature. The risk of thermal shock adds to the excitement of the experience, as the kiln is taken up to temperatures of approx 1000°C.
Only pots made in classes may be fired in the class kilns, however, where time and space are available, I am happy to offer a kiln firing service (full-kiln load only, at your own risk) at the prices below. Due to health and safety regulations and my insurance terms, it is not possible for you to fire the kilns yourselves. Please ask for details.
A full kiln-load - bisque - (approx 5-6 hours) - £90
A full kiln-load - stoneware glaze - (approx 9-10 hours) - £140
Enjoy relaxed pottery classes taught by experienced local potter, Claire Porter in her garden pottery studio. (max 5 people).
For adults/older teenagers. 2 hour sessions. Weekday mornings/evenings.

Skills and Techniques covered.
Introduction to clay, pinch pots, coil pots, making slabs and slab building, basic throwing techniques, decoration and glazing and much more!
SMALL CHARGE FOR FIRING.
*Please note this is non refundable and absences will be charged for. If a lesson is cancelled by the tutor then it will be rolled over to the following week.
What to bring: An old apron and suitable shoes.
Please be aware that your pots may take some time to be fired. Clay must dry thoroughly before it goes in the kiln, and there is often a queue of pots waiting to be fired. If you make a lot of items, the mass will not be prioritised. Occasionally, accidents will happen and your pots may be damaged during firing.
All completed taster session pottery must be collected within 6 weeks of being fired. It is up to you to make contact and check if your pot is ready to collect. If it has not been collected within 6 weeks it will become property of Claire Porter Ceramics and will be disposed of by any means we see fit. If it has not been finished and the person making it has not attended again to finish it, it will not be fired and will be reclaimed.
All expiry dates on vouchers are final.
We will only fire student pottery that has been made in our studio (to enquire about kiln rental and pricing of items made elsewhere, please see above).
All use of materials and tools is at the discretion of Claire Porter Ceramics.
